How to Submit Your Squarespace Website to Google Search Console (And Why It Matters for Coaches and Therapists)

How to Submit Your Squarespace Website to Google Search Console

Hello to Coaches, Therapists, and Everyone Launching a New Site!

If you’re here, you probably just launched a beautiful Squarespace website—congrats! The next step is getting your site found by Google, which is where Google Search Console comes in. This tool helps make sure your website is visible in search results, offering insights and even troubleshooting for common website issues. This is a quick and powerful step in building your online presence and reaching more potential clients.

Here’s a simple guide on how to submit your Squarespace website to Google Search Console in just a few steps, but first…

Why Submit Your Squarespace Site to Google Search Console?

While Google will eventually find your site on its own, submitting it to Google Search Console helps you in several ways:

  1. Be found faster by new clients: By submitting your site, you help Google “see” it faster, which means your pages can show up in search results sooner.

  2. Know how people find you: Google Search Console shows the actual words and phrases people use to find your services, which can give you ideas for tweaking your site’s content.

  3. Catch issues early: Sometimes, a page might not be optimized for mobile, or a link may be broken. Google Search Console flags these, so you can fix them before they affect your visitors.

  4. See what’s working: By tracking what people click on, you can see which pages and search terms bring in traffic—insights that are invaluable for building a stronger website strategy.

Step-by-Step Guide: Submitting Your Squarespace Site to Google Search Console

Step 1: Log In to Google Search Console

Head over to Google Search Console and sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have a Google account yet, it only takes a few minutes to set one up.

Step 2: Add Your Squarespace Website as a Property

Once you’re logged in, click on “Add Property.” You’ll see two options:

  • Domain Property: Tracks all versions of your site, like http and https, www and non-www.

  • URL Prefix: Tracks a specific version of your site, such as https.

Most Squarespace users choose URL Prefix because it’s compatible and easy to set up. Unlike the Domain Property method, which requires adding a TXT DNS record with your domain registrar, URL Prefix lets you verify ownership using an HTML tag you can add directly in Squarespace. This way, you can stay within the Squarespace interface without needing to navigate DNS settings.

Step 3: Verify Your Ownership in Squarespace

Google needs to confirm that you own the site. Here’s how to verify using the HTML Tag method, which is simple for Squarespace users:

  1. Choose HTML Tag as your verification method, and Google will give you a code that starts with <meta name="google-site-verification"....

  2. Copy this code.

  3. In Squarespace, go to Pages > Website tools > Code Injection.

  4. Paste the code into the Header section and save your changes.

  5. Go back to Google Search Console and click “Verify.”

Step 4: Submit Your Sitemap

Your Squarespace site automatically generates a sitemap, which helps Google understand your site’s structure and content.

  1. In Google Search Console, go to Sitemaps on the left.

  2. In the URL field, type sitemap.xml at the end of your website address (e.g., https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml), then click “Submit.”

Google will now start indexing all of your pages, not just the homepage!

Step 5: Check the Indexing Status

Once your site is submitted, you can check its indexing status to see if there are any issues.

  1. Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.

  2. Enter the URL of any page you want to check, and you’ll see whether it’s been indexed or if there are any issues.

Tips for Making the Most of Google Search Console on Your Squarespace Site

Google Search Console provides ongoing data and insights about your site, which are invaluable as you grow your online presence.

  • Request Indexing for New Content: Any time you publish a new blog post or update a service page, use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing. This lets Google know about the new content faster, which can boost visibility.

  • Monitor Your Search Traffic: In the Performance tab, you’ll find the search terms people use to reach your site, which can guide you on what words to use more often.

  • Fix Issues Quickly: In the Coverage tab, you’ll be alerted to any broken links, pages that aren’t loading, or other technical issues, allowing you to resolve them quickly.

  • Check Mobile Usability: Many clients search from their phones, so be sure to use the Mobile Usability report to ensure everything looks great on mobile.
