Three Years of Sommerful Studio: 10 Lessons I’ve Learned Along the Way
Starting Sommerful Studio felt like jumping into the unknown, but looking back, I’m grateful for every lesson and moment of growth. If you're on a similar path, these 10 insights might resonate with you:
1. You Don’t Need Much to Begin
When I launched, I didn’t have fancy equipment, an office, or a big budget—just a laptop and determination. I still work from my living room on my couch! Often, you already have everything you need to take that first step. Trust in what you already know and have; the rest will come as you grow.
2. Sometimes, Your Mindset is Your Worst Enemy
Self-doubt and limiting beliefs have often held me back. These thoughts stopped me from showing up as my authentic self on social media. I’m learning that my biggest competitor isn’t out there - it’s my own mindset.
3. Clarity Takes Time and Experimentation
In the beginning, I offered branding services and felt unsure. Who was I designing for? Denmark or the U.S.? Each project and client brought answers, gradually refining my vision. Now, I design Squarespace templates for coaches, therapists, and wellness experts. This feels right—for now. And as for the future, we’ll see.
4. A Business Friend is Priceless
I didn’t expect to find true friends through work, especially people I’ve never met in person. But connecting with fellow business owners has been invaluable. Coaches and mentors are helpful, but business friends who understand the daily struggles and small wins? Priceless.
5. Write Ideas Down Right Away
Too often, I thought I’d remember a brilliant concept—only to forget it later. Now, when inspiration strikes, I write it down immediately. It’s a simple habit that keeps my mind clear and keeps ideas from slipping away.
6. Action is as Important as Strategy
It’s easy to get stuck in the planning phase, trying to perfect every detail. I had the idea to create website templates two years before I acted on it! It’s good to remember: planning has its place, but only action brings ideas to life.
7. Hard Work Doesn’t Always Pay Off Right Away
Building an online presence often feels like shouting into the void. Pinterest, for example, had little traction at first, but months later, I saw unexpected clicks on my pins. It’s a reminder to keep going, even when progress feels invisible. Results come in their own time.
8. Not Every Task is Fun, But Knowing the Basics is Worth It
Bookkeeping isn’t my favorite, but doing it myself has taught me a lot. When I’m ready to outsource, I’ll know what’s involved and what to look out for. Tackling the “boring” parts of business often builds skills you didn’t know you’d need.
9. Social Media Evolves Quickly, But Authenticity is Timeless
I've often struggled with self-doubt and limiting beliefs that have held me back from showing up authentically on social media. I have countless drafts of unposted content and unfinished blog posts because I’m always questioning if they’re “good enough.” I’m learning that my biggest challenge isn’t outside competition - it’s my own mindset. Pushing through these doubts is an ongoing process, but each step forward helps me build confidence.
10. Confidence Grows With Experience
Every client testimonial and piece of feedback is a confidence boost. These moments remind me that my work matters and that there’s real impact in what I’m doing. Over time, I’m learning to trust in the worth of my business.
Three years have brought growth, change, and clarity. If you’re just starting out, I hope these lessons encourage you to keep going, trust your path, and embrace every challenge along the way. God bless you!
